The quilt ministry at BUMC was started in February 2004 as an outreach to cancer-stricken patients who are members of or friends of members of BUMC. Jesus states that “Wherever two or more are gathered in my name, there I am also.” By joining with others interested in this unique outreach, participants pray for those for whom the quilts are made while their hands stay busy piecing and sewing the quilts!
During a severe illness, when many people may feel “abandoned,” a prayer quilt is a wonderfully tangible way of letting someone know that they are remembered and being prayed for. There are few places scarier than an oncology waiting room and the “witness” that a prayer quilt can make is powerful – both to the patient and their family, as well as to the hospital staff. A customized quilt is made for each person, with fabric selected that is appropriate for that person’s age and gender. Each quilt has a label that identifies it as being made at BUMC with a pledge to pray for that person.
There are many ways you can participate in this ministry, EVEN IF YOU DON’T SEW:
-
Join in one (or both!) of the two teams of
quilters: One group meets every other Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The second group meets every Wednesday evening from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. Both groups meet at the home of Lillian Coles, 16700 Birmingham Highway (about 1 mile north of the church).
-
Donate 100% cotton fabric in small prints suitable for quilting. (Lengths should be in 4’ blocks.)
-
Our group also can always use donations of remnants, batting and backing materials, as well as ultrafine Sharpie markers.
-
Please Wash and iron donated bolts of fabric before they are cut into blocks for piecing.
-
Write Bible verses on the ‘blank’ squares – we need someone with beautiful penmanship!
-
Save Joanne’s Fabrics coupons and give them to Sue O’Dwyer or Lillian Coles for fabric acquisition.
-
Let us know if you know of someone who needs a quilt.
We hope you’ll join us!
