Our first Katrina Relief team has returned from D'Iberville. BUMC
member Susan Wallace worked as a greeter at the Tent City. Here’s
some of what she and others had to say… [Susan] you, Jarrett
and Jeff were/are inspirations to us all as you lead by doing. The
people you touched will remember Jesus is in their lives even in the
middle of earthly tragedy because you reached out to them as His
messenger

…I spoke to about 2000 people in 2 days which was a lot on my
voice but was so meaningful because I got to interact with so many
people. I'm a kindergarten teacher, so I am a person that naturally
loves to hug people. So, often I would do that or gently squeeze the
person's arm while talking to them. So many of them just needed
someone to listen to them, as well as the human touch factor, like
the hugs and pats on the arm. I tried to stay very upbeat and happy
while with them because something as simple as a smile from an
energetic person did a lot to lift their spirits. Though not
required in any way, I think having a female as the greeter was a
good thing because 80% of the people coming through the line were
women, and it may have been a little intimidating for some of them
to open up to a man. …I couldn't imagine having a job more rewarding
than the greeter this past week. God truly blessed me through
positioning me at that door. [I tried to] remember to smile, listen
to, and love each person with whom I interacted. In the big scheme
of things, that's all anyone needs.

I’ve only been back from the Katrina Region for a few days …
the images of the “sticks and bricks” scattered about are already
fading; however, the faces of the persons I encountered are etched
on my mind for eternity.
